Wholistic Risk Chapter
Wholistic Risk Innovation Management (WRIM) integrates the concept of Wholistic Thinking to address workplace challenges comprehensively and effectively. Wholistic thinking combines four essential thinking skills—holistic, critical, systems, and lateral thinking. Together, these skills provide a robust foundation for Wholistic Risk Innovation Management in VUCA business environments, where change is the only constant. The purpose of WRIM is to first change the way we think before we can manage risk associated with innovation management for business excellence.
-
Holistic thinking fosters a big-picture perspective (putting the pieces together)
-
Critical thinking ensures rigorous analysis of alternatives (remove irrelevant/redundant pieces and replace with improved ones)
-
Systems thinking identifies interconnections (putting the right piece in the right place)
-
Lateral thinking encourages innovative problem-solving via six different perspectives (creating the pieces to solve problems from different angles).

Wholistic thinking is pivotal in workplace risk innovation management from strategic to business to operational, and across functional levels (top down and bottom-up). Risk is highest for new starts-ups, SMEs, and MNEs in achieving 3Gs (to grow, glow and globalise the companies) - from local to regional, international, and global. Project-based accelerated action learning is the essence of risk innovation management in order to cope with the rate of change in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) ecosystem. By enabling employees to think Wholistically, WRIM enhances their abilities to integrate, innovate, implement and improve with the aid of influencing-power in lieu of decision-power.
WRIM is a vital component of organisational success. It leverages on the project-based accelerated action learning cycle of - See, Think, Plan, Do, Study, Improve. This iterative and incremental process ensures a structured approach to observe, identify, assess, action, learn and implement risk mitigation and response strategies at the right time. WRIM fosters continuous learning and adaptability in people, process and planet (technology) to stay relevant and attain sustainable competitive advantage.
WRIM approach demystifies risk innovation management pivoting on the principles, practices, promises, and philosophy of Wholistic thinking leveraging on project-based accelerated action learning as its lynchpin. Innovation for quality and risk management is everybody responsibility. Indeed, ISO 9000 for Quality, ISO 3100 for Risk, and ISO 56000 for Innovation from an Wholistic treatment can be developed into a unified “Integrated Risk Innovation Management System”.
Supported by WILL (Wholistic Institute of Lifelog Learning) books, pragmatic, and contemporary courses and workshops - this modern methodology will enrich enterprises and universities worldwide. Join us in advancing risk innovation management principles, practices, promises, and philosophy to bridge the theory and practice gap. Risk innovation manager contributes to enterprise success!
